Production of Pistachio and Banana Increased in 2020
Production of pistachio and banana increased in 2020. On the other hand, a decrease was observed in cotton and olive production.
According to information obtained from the Turkish Statistical Institute (
TURKSTAT) data, in 2020, while the most increase was in production of cereals by 8.7 per cent and other crops in the vegetable product groups, production quantity in this product group was 69 million 337 thousand 110 tons.
Increase in Wheat Production
Wheat production increased by 7.9 percent to 20 million 500 thousand tons, barley production increased by 9.2 percent to 8 million 300 thousand tons, corn production increased by 8.3 percent to 6 million 500 thousand tons.
In the same period, oat production increased by 18.7 percent to 314 thousand 528 tons, while rye production decreased by 4.6 percent to 295 thousand 681 tons.
Potato production increased by 4.4 percent on an annual basis in 2020. Last year, 5 million 200 thousand tons of potatoes were produced. Chickpea production did not change during this period and remained at 630 thousand tons.
Sunflower production in oilseeds decreased 1.6 percent to 2 million 67 thousand 4 tons, while peanut production reached 215 thousand 927 tons with an increase of 27.5 percent.
Pistachio Production Increased Significantly
During the said period, production in pistachio increased significantly. Pistachio production, which increased by 248.7 percent in this period, reached 296 thousand 376 tons. Walnut production increased by 27.4 percent to 286 thousand 706 tons.
In 2020, banana production reached 728 thousand 133 tons with an increase of 32.8 percent, while fig production reached 320 thousand tons with an increase of 3.2 percent.
Olive and Cotton Production Decreased
Seed cotton production, which is within the scope of raw plants used in textiles, decreased by 19.4 percent to 1 million 773 thousand 646 tons. In this period, olive production decreased by 13.7 percent to 1 million 316 thousand 626 tons, and hazelnut production decreased by 14.2 percent to 665 thousand tons.
While the production of poppy used in perfumery and pharmacy decreased by 24.7 percent to 20 thousand 542 tons, lavender production increased by 139.3 percent to 3 thousand 499 tons.
Vegetable production increased by 0.3 compared to the previous year to 31 million 196 thousand 717 tons in 2020.
Onion production in tubers and root vegetables increased by 3.6 percent to 2 million 280 thousand tons, and dry garlic production increased by 13.3 percent to 116 thousand 840 tons.
A decrease was observed in carrot and leek production. Carrot production decreased by 11.3 percent to 588 thousand 788 tons, and leek production decreased 3.7 percent to 225 thousand 480 tons.
Tomato production increased by 2.8 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year and reached 13 million 204 thousand 15 tons. Paste pepper production also increased by 4.6 percent and reached 1 million 291 thousand 91 tons. Pumpkin production increased by 22.2 percent and reached 547 thousand 208 tons. Cucumber production decreased by 1.6 percent to 1 million 886 thousand 239 tons.
Bell pepper production increased by 4.9 percent to 389 thousand 957 tons, while pointed pepper production decreased by 7 percent to 838 thousand 890 tons.
Watermelon and melon production also fell by 9.8 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively. Watermelon production was recorded as 3 million 491 thousand 554 tons, and melon production as 1 million 724 thousand 856 tons.
