Turkish Airlines (THY), which ranked fourth in Europe in 2019 with a daily average of 1,331 flights, rose to the second place with 623 flights per day in 2020.
Eurocontrol has published 2020 statistics on the aviation industry. The aviation industry, shaken by the coronavirus epidemic, suffered greatly in 2020. According to the announced data, European airlines, airports and air navigation service providers lost 56.2 billion Euros, while passenger loss was around 1.7 billion.
Last year, 5 million flights were made in Europe, 11.1 million flights were made in 2019. There were 6.1 million fewer flights compared to the previous year.
In the aviation industry, which has given unprecedented losses due to the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic, 191 thousand job losses have been announced in Europe alone.
In the report, which stated that the recovery in the aviation sector requires time, it was stated that European aviation will be positively affected by the summer of 2021 thanks to the widespread use of coronavirus vaccines.
Ryan Air Ranks First
The coronavirus outbreak has also changed the list of airlines that fly the most in Europe. The Irish airline Ryan Air, which was at the top of the list with 2,323 flights per day in 2019, did not lose its place with 951 flights in 2020 and ranked first.
Turkish Airlines (THY), which ranked fourth with a daily average of 1,331 flights in 2019, ranked second with 623 flights last year.
Another Turkish airline company, Pegasus Airlines, jumped from 14th to 10th with 261 flights per day.
Istanbul Airport, which started service in 2019, has become one of the top 5 airports in Europe with a daily average of 504 flights in 2020.
