RENEWABLE SOURCES FOR THE FIRST TIME OUTPACED FOSSIL FUELS

The energy report of the European Union in the first six months of the year was published. Historical figures appeared. Energy use from renewable sources for the first time in Europe outpaced fossil fuels, according to a report in Bloomberg.

CARBON EMISSION DECREASED BY 23 PERCENT

The decrease in the demand for energy due to the Corona virus epidemic and awareness of the environment had a big share in this. 40 percent of the electricity produced by the EU in the first half of the year was obtained from renewable sources such as wind turbines and solar panels. 34 percent were provided from fossil fuels. As a result, carbon dioxide emissions from the energy sector decreased by 23 percent. These developments in numbers greatly encouraged European officials who aim to reset their carbon footprint by the middle of the century.

FOSSIL FUEL PRODUCTION HAS DECREASED 18 PERCENT

“This marks a symbolic moment in Europe's electricity transformation,” said Ember's electrical analyst Dave Jones, an energy think tank. He shows that there is a definite exit for countries like Poland and the Czech Republic who are considering how to get rid of coal. The rise of renewable energy was one of the rare positive developments in the economic turmoil caused by the Corona virus epidemic. Plants that run on fossil fuels have stopped production, and the capacity of renewable resources has been increased, both due to reduced demand and outbreak concerns. According to Ember's data, electricity demand in the EU fell 7 percent in the first half of the year. Production with fossil fuel decreased by 18 percent compared to the same period last year. In contrast, energy from renewable sources increased by 11 percent.
The biggest loser of 2020 was coal, which is the source of the most harmful to the environment. Steps taken by governments to reduce emissions began to abandon this fuel source as the price of carbon rose. Coal's use across the European Union decreased by 32 percent.
As a result of more preference of renewable energy, 'negative prices' will be. On a windy or sunny day, the grids can overflow with power when there is not enough consumption. In this case, customers will be paid to use electricity!
