Şahin: Life Will Be Back to Normal Next Winter
Uğur Şahin, CEO of
BioNTech company, stated that life will be back to normal by next winter.
Şahin, CEO of the company named BioNTech, who found the coronavirus vaccine in a joint study with
Pfizer, emphasized that upcoming winter months will be difficult again, since the vaccine does not have a huge impact on the number of cases.
Last week, BioNTech and Pfizer announced that the vaccine was 90 percent effective against the virus, according to test results. In the test applied on around 43 thousand people, the vaccine was administered in 2 doses 3 weeks apart.
Participating in the Andrew Marr Show program broadcasted on the BBC, Şahin said he believed that the vaccine would reduce the transmission of the disease and prevent the development of symptoms in a vaccinated person.
Şahin said, “I believe that with such a highly effective vaccine, human transmission will be reduced, maybe not 90 percent, maybe 50 percent. However, let's not forget that this will bring a big decrease in the spread of the epidemic. If everything goes well, the distribution of the vaccine may begin at the end of the year and early next year.”
Stating that their goal is to distribute 300 million doses worldwide as of April, Şahin said:
“With the falling infection rates, the summer months will also help us and it is absolutely crucial that we achieve a high vaccination rate in the autumn / winter of next year.”
