In a written statement, Biden stated that since the day Russia began massing troops on the Ukrainian border, the US has been working with its partners and allies for a strong and common response against Russia.
In his meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz this month, Biden emphasized that Berlin is a pioneer in taking steps towards Russia. Biden emphasized that they are working closely with Germany to stop the Nord Stream 2 project if Russia invades Ukraine.
Reminding that after the close consultations between the two countries, Germany stopped the certification process of the Nord Stream 2 project yesterday, Biden said, "Today, I instructed my management to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2 AG and company officials. These steps are against Russia and Ukraine. It is part of the first part of the sanctions we have imposed in response to his actions against the United States."
Underlining that the US will not hesitate to take further steps if Russia continues to escalate tensions in the region, Biden said, "With the steps he took, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin gave the whole world an unprecedented urge to move away from Russian gas and other forms of energy."
Biden also thanked Scholz for the steps he took towards Russia.
In his statement yesterday, Scholz stated that after Russia's recognition of the so-called separatist republics, he ordered the certification process of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline, which will carry Russian gas to Germany, to be stopped.
