State of Emergency Declared by WHO: Monkeypox Outbreak

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the monkeypox outbreak that continues to spread across Europe and countries around the world as a Public Health Emergency International Concern (PHEIC).

In the statement recorded by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), it was noted that they conveyed information to the press members about the Emergency Committee meeting held on July 21 at the headquarters in Geneva. While WHO confirmed that more than 16 thousand cases of monkeypox were reported from 75 countries, it was stated that 5 people died due to the virus. Ghebreyesus said, "The Committee could not reach a consensus that the monkeypox outbreak constitutes an International Public Health Emergency. Scientific criteria, evidence and other information on the virus are insufficient and have left us with many unknowns. The virus is spreading rapidly around the world with new modes of transmission and we know very little about it. Due to its rapid spread in Europe, I have concluded that the monkeypox virus constitutes an International Public Health Emergency.” The WHO first met on June 23rd to discuss the declaration of monkeypox as a PHEIC.
