Tesla showed its new compact SUV for the first time in Germany
Tesla showed its new compact SUV for the first time in Germany shortly before the start of deliveries. The vehicle that was presented in Berlin on Thursday evening came from Shanghai. Until production starts at the Tesla plant in Grünheide near Berlin, the German and European markets are to be supplied with Model Y cars from China.
Tesla originally wanted to start production of the Model Y in Grünheide near
Berlin in July, but the completion of the first European plant is taking longer after delays in the approval process. The start of deliveries of the Model Y in Europe was announced for the third quarter, and the first cars should now go to buyers in August. The start of production in Grünheide is currently targeted by the end of the year.
The SUV is a slightly larger version of Tesla's first mass market car, Model 3. In the second quarter, the company delivered a good 199,000 Model 3 and Y vehicles, which are the basis for Tesla's advance into the mass market. Germany is one of the markets in which the SUV category is particularly popular - and Tesla wants to benefit from it with the Model Y.
In addition to the campaign in the German capital, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made headlines in the USA. There he announced the launch of the prototype of a humanoid robot called "Tesla Bot". Musk spoke on Thursday (local time) on the occasion of the company's "AI Day" - an "
Artificial Intelligence Day" (AI) - that robots could take on dangerous, repetitive or boring tasks in the future. The robot with the human-like appearance will have a profound impact on the economy, said the entrepreneur.
Tesla also presented computer chips for training its automated driving system at the event. The company's director, Ganesh Venkataramanan, said he asked a Tesla engineer a few years ago to develop a "super-fast" training computer. That's why the "Dojo" project was started. The computer system should be ready for use from next year.
