TESLA : Tesla needs a lot of water to produce its electric cars
Tesla needs a lot of water to produce its electric cars. In Grünheide ; at the location of the new Gigafactory, however; the local water supplier warns ; A connection is not guaranteed. There is not enough drinking water in the surrounding area; nor is there an order from Tesla to tap more water.Given the plans for the first part of Tesla's US electric car factory in Brandenburg ; there are apparently uncertainties about the water supply. The Strausberg-Erkner Water Association (WSE) is therefore raising the alarm.Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach was surprised. "All talks held so far on the subject of water have had the result that the pending problems can be solved and do not endanger the Tesla project ;" said the SPD politician. The Environment Ministry also sees no danger: Environment Minister Axel Vogel of the Greens said that the water board had also given a positive forecast for the first stage of expansion.WSE association leader André Bähler previously warned in an internal letter about insufficient drinking water: "The fact that we did not have sufficient permits in July 2020 and the necessary development contract was concluded gives cause for concern." All further expansion stages for the development of the Tesla factory could not be made possible without serious changes and extensions. Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) had first reported on the letter.
Water connection in November "not guaranteed"
The association fears that if the factory is expanded further; the water reserves for the region may become scarce. Tesla has also not yet signed a development contract ; it says. "A timely connection cannot be guaranteed under these conditions" ; especially since the company already needs the connections for drinking and dirty water in November 2020. According to criticism ; Tesla had reduced the forecast water consumption from 3.3 million to around 1.4 million cubic meters per year.Tesla plans to roll up to 500,000 vehicles a year in Grünheide in Brandenburg from July next year. The final environmental approval from the state of Brandenburg is still pending. Tesla is already building at its own risk through early approvals. The Brandenburg State Environment Agency recently gave the green light for the foundation and structural work with an early start. Conservationists and citizens fear negative consequences for the environment. Critics protested the planned settlement on Saturday at the Tesla site.
