The Australian Parliament has passed a law on social media coverage
The Australian Parliament passed legislation on Thursday night requiring digital companies to pay for the news content of Australian companies.
The AFP agency informed about it.
According to the
Australian government, the new law will ensure that news firms "are fairly remunerated for their work, which will help to promote journalism that is in the public interest."
The report comes after Facebook and
Google, which are most affected by the law, reached an agreement with the Australian government this week.
The finance minister, Josh Frydenberg, and communications minister Paul Fletcher announced on Tuesday that Facebook would reopen Australian news sites, which it blocked last week in response to the bill.
At the same time, they added that the government will adopt further amendments to the disputed law in order to clarify the position of digital platforms and media companies and the relations between them.
The US technology giant caused outrage last week because it mistakenly blocked not only the news media but also the accounts of several local health authorities, emergency services and charities - and even its own site.
