The loss of airlines can reach almost one hundred billion dollars this year
A recovery in the sector is expected by the end of the year.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects airlines to make higher losses this year than forecast two months ago. However, the sector expects a recovery at the end of the year.
IATA said it expects airlines to lose between $ 75 billion and $ 95 billion in 2021 (€ 61.75 billion to € 78.22 billion). It estimated a loss of about $ 48 billion in December and $ 38.7 billion a month earlier.
However, the worsening forecast also represents better data than in 2020, when the loss reached approximately USD 150 billion.
IATA chief
Alexandre de Juniac believes the sector could recover in the second half of this year. A digital covid passport, which should simplify passenger handling and which IATA wants to introduce at the end of March, should help.
