The average worker's rewards fell, and bosses jumped upward
The average worker's rewards fell, and bosses jumped upward, the study showed. Employers with the lowest median wages include, for example, beverage manufacturer Coca-Cola, cruise ship operator Carnival Corp, and the Yum! Brands. The US study shows that 51 out of 100 companies reduced annual pay for ordinary workers by an average of two percent between 2019 and 2020, while compensation for CEOs increased by 29 percent.
The study mentioned, for example, the company Aptiv, which deals with automotive parts. It made adjustments that increased the CEO's compensation last year to just over $ 31 million, according to data from the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
At the same time, the technology company reduced the average employee's salary by 19 percent to $ 5,906 per year last year. The amount includes part-time and full-time employees, but also many other employees who work for the company outside the
United States.
However, according to Aptiv, the CEO's remuneration includes accounting adjustments and does not reflect the actual amount of compensation. The CEO reportedly earned $ 13.5 million last year, which is 11 percent less than in 2019.
According to a spokesman for Aptiv, the pay ratio reflects the fact that many of the company's employees live outside the United States. According to him, accounting adjustments need to be taken into account.
"Less than half of what was reported for 2020 was real compensation from the CEO," a spokesman told CBC News. "Proactive steps to protect the safety and well-being of our employees (during the
pandemic) and deliveries to customers have enabled Aptiv to maintain a strong workforce and resilient operations," he added.
According to Reuters, the pay ratio between CEOs and average employees for 51 companies was 830: 1.
