The Construction Of A Third Runway At Munich Airport Is A Long Way Off
The construction of a third runway at Munich Airport is a long way off: In view of the massive slump in air traffic due to the Corona crisis, Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder has now announced that plans will be put on hold for another five years. "During my term of office, the third runway will not come," said Söder, according to participants, in a speech at the CSU parliamentary group meeting in Munich - he is aiming for two legislative periods as head of government, so that the project would be buried by 2028.
Söder said that the next budget would have to provide money for the airports and the trade fairs. The airport simply no longer has the money for a third runway. The construction of the third runway, which has been planned for many years, has always been highly controversial - also between the government partners in Bavaria. In their coalition agreement in autumn 2018, the CSU and Free Voters therefore agreed not to pursue the plans until the end of the current legislative period in 2023.
