The Danes will create an artificial island for electricity distribution
In the beginning, it will provide enough electricity for three million households.
Denmark will build an artificial island in the North Sea to serve as a distribution hub for energy from wind farms.
The island will be created about 80 kilometers from the west coast of the country and will be connected to several European countries.
The Danish government announced that the investment will require about DKK 210 billion (EUR 28.33 billion). The government did not state a specific date for the start of work.
As part of the
Climate Agreement for Energy and Industry,
Denmark aims to become the first nation in the world to start operating on electricity islands with a maximum capacity of about 5 GW of wind power. The construction is planned to be finished by 2030.
According to the Danish Energy Agency, the distribution node will initially have a capacity of three gigawatts, which will provide enough electricity for three million European households. The capacity is to be gradually increased to ten gigawatts.
