The European Union Can Impose Tariffs On American Goods
The European Union can impose tariffs of up to $ 4 billion on American goods based on a World Trade Organization (WTO) decision because Washington has illegally supported aircraft manufacturer Boeing. The WTO ruled a year after approving billions of dollars in US tariffs on EU goods for subsidies to Boeing's rival Airbus. The WTO decision on tariffs that can be applied by the EU is final and cannot be appealed. This is a settlement of a complaint dating back to 2006, which is part of a long-running dispute between two aircraft manufacturers in the WTO.The WTO Appellate Body concluded that Boeing had received at least $ 5 billion in subsidies that are prohibited under international trade rules. The United States has argued that sanctions for illegal subsidies should be a maximum of $ 412 million. The EU, on the other hand, argued that sanctions should be around $ 8 billion. The WTO has thus decided on sanction tariffs that are ten times higher than allowed by the US, but only half of what the EU has called for.
