The Number Of People Who Requested Unemployment Benefits Reached 1 Million In US
The US Department of Labor released data on weekly unemployment benefits. Accordingly, for the first time in US the number of people who requested unemployment benefits increased by 135 thousand people in the week ending August 15 compared to the previous week and reached 1 million 106 thousand. The previous week fell below 1 million for the first time since the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic began to take effect in the United States in March. However, it exceeded the market expectation of 925 thousand. The previous week's data on the number of unemployment benefit applications has been revised from 963 thousand to 971 thousand. Thus, for the first time in the US, the number of applicants for unemployment benefits exceeded 57 million in total since the week ending March 14. As of last week, 4-week average unemployment benefit applications decreased by 79 thousand people compared to the previous week and decreased to 1 million 175 thousand 750. Meanwhile, ongoing unemployment applications decreased by 636 thousand to 14 million 844 thousand in the week ending 8 August compared to the previous week.
