The Suez Canal had revenue of more than $ 5.8 billion
The Suez Canal had revenue of more than $ 5.8 billion in the past business year, a new record.
The canal generated them despite the negative impact of the new
coronavirus on world trade and the blockage of the waterway at the end of March by the container ship Ever Given.
As the head of the Suez Canal Administration Office, Osama Rabi, reported on Monday, revenues from the operation of the canal reached USD 5.84 billion (EUR 4.92 billion) for the 2020/2021 business year, which ended on June 30. These are the highest sales in the history of the canal.
"Despite several complications, revenues from the operation of the canal increased by more than 2 percent, "said Rabi, quoted by the AFP agency.
The results would have been even better if there had been no accident in the canal on March 23, when the giant container ship Ever Given ran flat in bad weather and blocked one of the key sea routes.
However, after her release for six days, the authorities detained her until recently, until her Japanese owners agreed with the SCA on compensation. The ship was released and could sail five days ago.
According to
Egypt, the ship crash cost about $ 15 million a day. Insurance companies, on the other hand, say that the damage to world trade can amount to several billion dollars.
SCA said 9763 ships have used the Suez Canal in six months of this year. This is 2 percent more than in the same period last year.
For the whole of 2020, approximately 19,000 ships passed through the canal, added SCA. More than 50 vessels used the Suez Canal every day.
