The Unemployment Rate In Germany Unexpectedly Fell
The unemployment rate in Germany unexpectedly fell to 6.2 percent in October from 6.3 percent in September. This follows from seasonally adjusted data released by the Federal Labor Office on Thursday.According to the AP, economists predicted that unemployment would remain at the level of the previous month.About 2.76 million people were out of work in October.Compared to August, their number decreased by 87,000 and thus reached the lowest since April. In a year-on-year comparison, however, there were 556,000 more unemployed people.Germany has managed to keep unemployment relatively low during the pandemic, thanks to various government support measures. For example, the Federal Labor Office has replaced at least 60 percent of their usual wages for people who have lost their jobs or had to stay at home due to pandemic measures. In August, the last month for which data are available, the number of people using this form of aid fell sharply to 2.58 million from 3.32 million in July.
