Car Production In Britain Fell To Its Lowest Level In 25 Years

Car production in Britain fell to its lowest level in 25 years in September as demand in foreign markets remained weak due to the new coronavirus pandemic. The British Association of Car Manufacturers and Dealers (SMMT) informed about it on Thursday. According to the latest SMMT data, production in Britain fell by five per cent year on year in September to 114,732 units, the lowest level since 1995. Production for foreign markets fell by 9.7 percent compared to last year to 87,533 units due to reduced supplies to key overseas markets, specifically to the European Union, the United States and China. At the same time, the production of vehicles for the domestic market increased in September, by 14.5 percent. The latest independent forecast predicts that British factories will produce less than 885,000 cars this year. This would mean that production volumes would fall below one million, for the first time since 2009. States across Europe are struggling with an increase in new cases of COVID-19, and restrictions have already been imposed in many parts of the United Kingdom. This suggests that the last quarter of 2020 will be challenging, SMMT said.
