The US has announced additional tariffs on products from Germany and France
The US has announced additional tariffs on products from Germany and France. This is due to a dispute over illegal subsidies to the aviation industry between the US and the European Union.
The new tariffs will affect aircraft parts from Germany and France, some wines, cognacs and other alcoholic beverages, the office of the US Trade Representative said on Wednesday evening.
In November, the Union announced additional tariffs on US products. It was based on a World Trade Organization decision that the Union could impose near-$ 4 billion (€ 3.26 billion) a year in criminal duties on imports from the United States due to illegal subsidies by Washington for aircraft manufacturer Boeing.
The US government claims that Brussels has taken unfair decisions when imposing tariffs, which means that it must adjust its own measures.
For example, the Union decided on tariffs based on the trade volume of Member States without Britain, which resulted in higher retaliatory duties against the United States.
"The Union must take action to compensate for this injustice," the US Trade Representative's office said Wednesday night.
The Union hopes that
Donald Trump's successor at the White House, Democrat
Joe Biden, will be willing to negotiate a solution to the years-long dispute over subsidies for the aviation industry.
