There will be no Voltswagen from Volkswagen, it was just an April joke
The US division of the Volkswagen Group will not change its name. Its spokeswoman confirmed that the news of the name change to Voltswagen was just an April joke, which apparently went further than expected.
The U.S. division of
Volkswagen, which is currently launching a massive campaign to launch its new fully electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) ID.4, said on Tuesday that renaming the brand to Voltswagen of America represented "its investment in e-mobility."
For several hours, the carmaker's representatives pretended that the report on the change of the brand name to Voltswagen was true, and a spokesman for the American division confirmed the change of name in the answer to the e-mail question whether it was an
April joke.
However, Volkswagen Group of America's Chief of Communications Mark Gillies confirmed late Tuesday night that it was a joke.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and other media outlets have previously said that the report on brand renaming is not true.
Volkswagen admitted that it was an attempt to humorously promote the new electric car. The news of the brand renaming in the US was initially accepted as true by several media, including the Associated Press, USA Today, CNBC and the Washington Post.
According to the WSJ daily, which first revealed that it was a joke, the report briefly increased the carmaker's share price.
