Tonga is accepting Bitcoin donations to support relief efforts after the country suffered a massive volcanic shock wave that caused a tsunami.
A massive volcanic eruption occurred at the Hunga Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai volcano on Friday. Multiple explosions occurred, leaving the citizens of Tongatapu, the main island of Tonga, with a tsunami.
Amid the challenges, crypto holders have expressed their sympathy and intent to donate Bitcoin (BTC) to aid relief operations. Twitter user Onair Blair urged Bitcoin supporter and former Tongan MP Lord Fusitu'a to set up a wallet address where people can donate Bitcoin for Tonga's relief funds.
With waves up to 1.2 meters covering roads and property, people began to flee to higher ground to escape. No casualties were reported at the time of writing. However, air and water pollution is now a top priority for charities.
Lord Fusitu'a shared a BTC wallet address and a link where people can send money to support relief operations. The address has received a total of 0.10794983 BTC ($4,625.29) since Sunday.
On Friday, Lord Fusitu'a told Cointelegraph about his plans to use geothermal energy from volcanoes to power Bitcoin
mining operations that will help finance the country.
There are 21 volcanoes in the country, and according to Lord Fusitu'a, "each volcano always produces 95,000 megawatts." Lord reported that a single volcano can generate $2,000 worth of Bitcoin daily, which will be given to Tongan families.
The former MP also stated that the country is ready to make Bitcoin a legal currency like El Salvador. In a series of tweets released Wednesday, he told Lord Fusitu'athat the initiative could take place as early as November or December.
