TRNC Chooses Its President!
The
TRNC chooses its president. The Turkish Cypriot people started voting to determine the president who will serve for the next 5 years.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus started to go to the polls at 8 am to elect a new president today. In addition to electing the president, citizens also vote for constitutional amendments to increase the number of high court judges. The voting process, which started at 8 am, will end at 6 pm, and 198 thousand 867 registered voters will be able to cast their votes in 738 ballot boxes. After the voting process ends, the ballot boxes will be closed and the vote counting process will be started.
This year, a total of 2 thousand 658 people appointed by the Supreme Election Board (YSK) take office at the polls. The YSK will announce the results of the public voting first for the Presidency and then the Constitutional amendment to the public this evening. Both results are planned to be finalized until 10 pm. On the other hand, it was seen that voters voted using masks and gloves within the scope of coronavirus measures. Those who served at the ballot box warned voters to use disinfectants. The Turkish Cypriot people go to the polls to elect their president for the 10th time since 1974.
11 Candidates Will Compete
A total of 11 candidates are competing in the election, 7 of which are independent.
President Mustafa Akıncı, President of the National Unity Party (UBP) and Prime Minister Ersin Tatar, President of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman, President of the Rebirth Party (YDP) Erhan Arıklı, as well as the independent candidate, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Kudret Özersay and Democrat Party (DP) Nicosia Deputy Serdar Denktaş are competing.
On the other hand, Alpan Uz, Mustafa Ulaş, Ahmet Boran and Arif Salih Kırdağ joined the race independently and Fuat Çiner as the candidate of the Nationalist Democracy Party.
Today's election has been recorded as the highest number of candidates attending to a presidential election in the TRNC since 1974.
