TRUMP APPROVED THE DECISION BANNING BYTEDANCE AND TENCENT

The expected step has come with ByteDance, who owns TikTok, and Tencent, who owns WeChat. President Donald Trump approved the decision banning ByteDance and Tencent from operating in his country. According to the news on CNBC, this ban will take effect within 45 days. The scope of the ban is yet unclear. It was noted that Minister of Commerce Wilbur Ross will determine the exact scope of the ban after 45 days. It has been claimed that there are large security vulnerabilities in TikTok and WeChat applications and that user information was shared with the Chinese Government. Donald Trump, on the order he signed, for the WeChat application, said, “The application automatically captures extensive information from users. This allows the Chinese Communist Party to access Americans' personal and private information. Thanks to this ban, it also captures the personal information of Chinese citizens who visit the USA. ” For Beijing-based ByteDance, owner of TikTok, the president said, “This app can be used for a disinformation campaign that benefits the Chinese Communist Party. The US should take aggressive measures against TikTok owners to protect its national security, ”he said.
TikTok denies these allegations. It was stated that the data of US users are stored in the USA and Singapore, and it is outside of Chinese law. Experts say, however, that the current law in China may force Chinese companies to transfer data to the government.
ByteDance has been negotiating for a while to sell the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand division of TikTok to Microsoft. Trump announced in a statement this week that he gave the Chinese company 45 days for this sale.
The law Trump signed came after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he wanted untrusted China-based apps like WeChat and TikTok to be removed from app stores in the US. Pompeo said now his ministry will work with other government agencies to limit the ability of Chinese cloud service providers to collect, store and operate data in the United States.
