Turkey Statement by EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso

Odile Renaud-Basso, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), said, "We expect positive growth for Turkey. We have raised our growth forecast for 2022 to 4.5 percent and our growth forecast for next year is slightly lower, but we believe Turkey has strong growth potential."

EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso said that she had very important and useful meetings during her stay in Turkey, adding that economic activity and industrial opportunities are strong in Turkey and that Turkey has a very young, energetic and talented population. "The EBRD started investing in Turkey in 2009. Since then we have invested over 17 billion dollars and we have a very high level of activity in the country," Basso said. Reminding that last year was a record-breaking year for investments in Turkey, Renaud-Basso said, "Last year we invested 2 billion dollars in Turkey. 93 percent of this was for the private sector. The development of the private sector in Turkey, green transformation and supporting the transition to a green agenda will be our priority areas in the coming period. We accompany our customers to green their operations and move towards decarbonization. Therefore, we are very pleased with our activity in Turkey." "Turkey is a very important country of operation. We are working with different partners on issues such as the greater involvement of women in certain financing programs and their better integration into the job market. We have worked on how to ensure a better situation for women using public transport in Istanbul. So this is one of the quality engagements of what we do, and it is very important to do." Renaud-Basso said that supporting the economy, supporting the private sector, supporting digitalization and decarbonization are among the priorities in Turkey. She also said, "So more than half of our financing project in Turkey are either renewable or green as they have a positive impact on carbon and contribute to decarbonization."

We Expect Positive Growth from Turkey!

Renaud-Basso stated that they want to finance new projects in Turkey and keep their activity levels high and said, "Of course, this depends a lot on demand. Therefore, we need projects from the government, municipalities and the private sector that we can finance. Projects that are environmentally friendly, increase competitiveness and contribute to inclusiveness are among our priorities. These are important criteria for us. We are ready to continue to be active in the country and help our clients through these difficult times. We have a renewable project that we are financing in Turkey and we continue to do that whenever possible. So I think this will continue to be a very important priority for us. Turkey has a very high potential, but it is still very dependent on coal and gas. I think it is very positive and important that Turkey signed the Paris Agreement last year. It is important in terms of defining Turkey's long and short term strategy. We expect positive growth for Turkey. We have raised our growth forecast for 2022 to 4.5 percent and our growth forecast for next year is slightly lower, but we believe that Turkey has a strong growth potential."
