Von der Leyen called EU states to speed up the transition to clean energy
On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on European Union (EU) member states to speed up the transition to clean sources of wind and solar energy, which will be significantly cheaper than imported fossil fuels due to domestic production.
On the eve of the EU summit on the energy crisis, it stated that 90 percent of gas consumption in the 27-nation bloc came from imports.
Most of them are provided by the strategic rival
Russia, which makes the union "vulnerable," said Von der Leyen.
"Although (Russian) Gazprom adhered to its long-term contracts with us, it did not respond to higher demand as it had done in previous years. Today, Europe is too dependent on gas, "said the head of the Brussels commission.
According to her, this means that the transition to green energy is not only necessary for the EU to become energy neutral by the middle of the century.
"The transition to clean energy is vital not only for our planet. It is also key to our economy and resilience to price shocks in energy prices, ”said Von der Leyen.
According to the AP agency, she thus referred to politicians such as the Hungarian Prime Minister
Viktor Orbán, who accused the commission's plans for a European Green Agreement of rising prices. The aim of the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality within the EU by 2050.
