Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would change its name to Meta
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would change its name to Meta. The new name immediately became the target of internet jokers and also aroused a wave of responses from experts and the public.
The name change comes at a time when the American Internet giant is struggling with criticism from legislators and regulators about its market power, algorithmic decisions and how it approaches
hate speech or misinformation on its platforms.
This, too, has been ridiculed, as some social network users feel that Zuckerberg is trying to sweep its existing problems under the rug by renaming the company.
Based on this, they create funny collages of Zuckerberg in disguise. Others joke that the name Meta is an abbreviation for "Mark Evading True Accountability", hence "Mark Evading Tax Accountability", ie "Mark avoids real and tax liability".
Others see the name change as a comic historical milestone, telling their grandchildren that they remember the days when Meta was still called Facebook, or ridicule Zuckerberg's previous statement that he wants a new corporate strategy in society. Strengthen creativity, with which the name Meta does not correspond much.
In the end, Zuckerberg also made fun of the rival social network Twitter, which announced that it had great news for its users and said "soon we're kidding, we're still Twitter".
In addition to making fun of the new name, and therefore of Zuckerberg himself, many people have several meanings that can be confusing to many.
The name can be caused by traders, for example, as there is the Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF, which is sold on the stock market under the name META, and the "new" Facebook will have to be listed as MVRS, which can be very confusing for investors.
Even more paradoxical about the whole situation is that if you buy shares of the Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF (META) instead of Meta shares (formerly Facebook), you will still support Facebook, as the company associated with the world's largest social network is part of the fund.
The name Meta also means something different in different languages. For example, in Spanish or Portuguese, meta indicates the word "target," for example, in Hebrew, it means the word "died." In Brazilian Portuguese, then the word even has a sexual connotation.
