Azerbaijan's Natural Gas Reached Europe
Azerbaijan's natural gas reached Europe. Natural gas arrived in Italy, Greece and Bulgaria on Thursday. With this natural gas import made by the European Union, the supply facility dependent on Russia has greatly diversified.
Azerbaijan began exporting natural gas to Europe through the US-backed Southern Gas Corridor. This has enabled Europe to diversify its gas supply.
In a joint statement made by
BP and Azerbaijan's official energy company Socar, it was reported that natural gas started to be sent to Italy, Greece and Bulgaria from the Shahdeniz field in the South Caspian Sea, led by BP Plc, on Thursday.
The European Union (EU) has been trying to reduce its dependence on Russia, which accounts for about a third of its gas supply.
Southern Gas Corridor which costed $ 33 billion for its construction in 7 years has a pipeline of 3 thousand 500 kilometers connecting the Shahdeniz Gas field and Caspian Sea to Georgia and Turkey.
Azerbaijan will provide 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Europe every year for 25 years. 8 billion cubic meters of the said figure will be delivered to Italy, and 1 billion cubic meters to Greece and Bulgaria each.
Speaking about the supply in question, Socar President Rövnag Abdullayev said, “At first, some people were skeptical of the project. Now the task is completed. Azerbaijani gas has reached Europe.”
