BEIRUT EXPLOSION FURTHER DEEPENED THE ECONOMIC CRISIS

On the one hand, the corona virus epidemic, on the other hand, the economic collapse… The Beirut explosion, while the Lebanese people were already in the middle of a big crisis, further deepened the economic crisis. Things have become even more complicated for the Lebanese government, which has been accused of corruption for some time, according to the report in Arab News. The Lebanese economy is on the verge of collapse. The country's currency has depreciated by more than 80 percent since October. Food prices rose close to 60 percent in the same period. Unemployment reached 50 percent. Red meat was removed from army meals. People started to shop in the markets only for their vital needs. While the United Nations warned of 'starvation' for Lebanon, the explosion caused great horror to the people who were struggling with great hardships. The financial effects of the explosion at the port in one of Beirut's busiest areas were also devastating. According to the news in Al Jazeera, 300,000 people were left homeless in the midst of a major economic crisis. Governor Marwan Abboud said they have begun work on providing shelter, food and water to these people. It was noted that about half of the buildings in the city were somehow affected by the explosion. Marwan Abboud said in his first statement that the size of the property damage was around $ 5 billion. Abboud later made a statement saying, “The extent of the damage is much greater than our initial estimate. It can reach $ 15 billion." According to the news in Reuters, Beirut Port, which is the heart of Lebanese exports, where more than 6 million people enter the country through imports, and used as a transfer center by the world's largest shipping companies, has disappeared. Chemical wastes generated after the explosion have the danger of contaminating agricultural lands. This will be another devastating effect for the Lebanese people, 75 percent of whom live below the poverty line and face starvation.
