Cult Agenda in Japan; Economy Minister Dismissed
Japan's Economy Minister Yamagiwa resigns over links to the Unification Church.
Japan's Economy Minister Daishiro Yamagiwa resigned from his post today over his links to the Unification Church, which has been criticized and criticized for resembling a cult.
Yamagiwa, the first official to resign from the government since Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida took office last year, is the most senior person to leave his post in the growing cult scandal following the assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe in July. Voter confidence in Kishida and his government has plummeted after news that nearly half of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) members have ties to the Unification Church.
While the resignation of the economy minister is expected to cause voters to lose confidence in the prime minister, Yamagiwa said he would not resign as an MP because he had not done anything illegal.
The Unification Church, founded in South Korea in the 1950s, came to the fore after the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on June 8. According to social media posts and news sources, the suspect in Abe's assassination had stated that the Unification Church had driven his mother to bankruptcy and that Abe had encouraged the church.
After the assassination, it was revealed that there were long-standing deep connections between LDP members and the church.
