FIFA and UEFA took action after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) called on Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials not to invite or allow them to participate in international organizations.
According to a joint statement from FIFA and UEFA, the FIFA Council and UEFA Executive Board, which decided to take additional measures due to Russia's military intervention in Ukraine, stated that the decision will be valid until a second announcement.
It was stated that the presidents of both unions hoped that the situation in Ukraine would improve rapidly so that football could once again be a carrier of unity and peace among the people.
