Lithium Signal from Chile!
Lithium signal from Chile! Chile, which holds half of the worlds lithium reserves, signaled electric vehicle manufacturers.
Chile's environmental regulators, with the contribution of other environmental agencies, aim to increase control over mining companies' extraction of saltwater containing thousands of liters of
lithium per second from beneath the Atacama desert.
On the other hand, mining companies argue that they have invested millions of dollars to reduce their carbon footprint and that such an audit should not decrease production.
Cristobal de La Maza, President of Chile's environmental monitoring agency, SMA, emphasizes that the main goal of the new approach is to minimize negative impacts on fragile ecosystems and local communities, while underlining that
lithium production should not be put at risk when sustainability is critical.
SMA Chairman La Maza said in a phone call Thursday:
“We don't think it's a movement against economic interests, our goal is just environmental. In environmental matters, what happened 30 years ago is not acceptable today.”
Aiming to expand operations in Chile, Albermarle Corp and its domestic rival SQM are in a key position to meet the demand that the industry expects to triple in the coming years.
