Microsoft Will Build Three Data Centers In The Greek Capital
Microsoft will build three data centers in the Greek capital of Athens, providing the Greek coronavirus pandemic economy with a much-needed investment of up to $ 1 billion (approximately $ 850 million). The news was announced on Monday by the American technology giant and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Over the next nine months, the two sides will work on a final agreement, which should include digital skills training programs for some 100,000 government and private sector workers, including teachers and students.
"This significant investment is a testament to our confidence in the Greek economy, the Greek population and the Greek government," said Microsoft President Brad Smith at a ceremony held at the Acropolis Museum in the ancient part of Athens. "It's not something we do often and thoughtlessly," he added.
Greece has recently emerged from a long-running financial crisis, but the country's economy has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, falling 15.2 percent year on year in the second quarter. Unemployment climbed to 18.3 percent in June, at 16.4 percent at the beginning of the year.
The pandemic has revealed Greece's heavy dependence on tourism. However, the Mitsotakis government wants to bring more balance to the Greek economy, in particular to develop the energy, technology and defense sectors. The state also wants to attract back tens of thousands of graduates who left Greece during the crisis.
Microsoft currently has data centers in 26 countries, including seven in the European Union. The company, based in Redmond, USA, is already working with the Greek government on a project to promote ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games.
