The United States has promised to halve emissions by 2030

The purpose of the newly set goal is, according to the US government, to force other large greenhouse gas producers to increase their own ambitions for change. Since taking office in January, Biden has sought to put the United States back at the forefront of the global fight against climate change following the presidency of its predecessor, Donald Trump, who withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement to reduce emissions. The new goal is a significant milestone in Biden's broader efforts to bring the United States to so-called carbon neutrality by 2050. The president expects his plan to bring millions of new and well-paid jobs to Americans. Opposition Republicans, on the other hand, say they will hurt the US economy. Changes in energy, transport and other sectors across the economy will be the main contributors to the reduction in total emissions. However, the White House has not set specific targets for individual sectors; it is going to publish them later this year. The concrete ways in which the United States wants to achieve its goals will be central to the United States' credibility in the eyes of other countries, especially given how significantly the US position may differ depending on who controls the White House. Biden recently unveiled a major plan for the development and maintenance of US infrastructure, which includes some measures to reduce emissions, such as in the transportation or energy sectors. However, his plan has yet to be approved by Congress. World leaders are working to keep global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Researchers say this would prevent the worst effects of climate change. According to the Global Carbon Project, the world's three largest CO2 producers in 2018 were the United States, along with China and the European Union. Biden is set to formally announce a new US target at an ongoing climate summit attended by other leaders in the world's most greenhouse gas-producing economies, such as Chinese President Xi Jinping. "When we close the summit on Friday, we will make it clear to everyone that the United States is back," said a US administration official. "The United States is on track to halve greenhouse gas emissions by the end of the decade," said President Biden. "The price for inactivity is still rising," he added.
